Moor Park is a 36-hole golf course located in the grounds of a stately home in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. Although a private members club, it is very popular with corporate and society golfers. The course was laid out in the early 1900’s to a Harry Colt design.
Ocmis designed and installed an extensive replacement system to irrigate the High and West course, and provide water to the adjacent 18-hole municipal course.
The new system includes irrigation to
• 36 greens, tees and approaches on the High and West course
• Putting and chipping greens and two practice tees
• Fairway watering points
• Many of the greens surrounds and some walk off areas between greens and adjacent tees
• 7 Tennis courts
• Landscape features including the Millennium Bank and the Flag Pole Garden
The previous irrigation system used water stored in a pond and dirt in the water caused problems with sprinklers and valves. Various options for filtering the water and cleaning the pond were investigated, and a new tank and pumphouse were found to be the best long term solution.
A 3metre by 4metre pump house and a storage tank were constructed in wood land to ensure it was screened from the Grade 1 listed mansion house. Ocmis assisted by supplying drawings and images of the proposals for the planning application.
As well as the greens sprinklers, Ocmis installed additional valve in head sprinklers directed away from the greens on the same greens pipe work. These Back-to-Back sprinklers are controlled independently of the greens sprinklers and are used to maintain high wear areas around the greens and enhance the presentation of the greens complexes.
The Council owned Rickmansworth Municipal course is adjacent to the private course and for historical reasons the irrigation systems are linked and operated from the same pump station. The systems are controlled separately and the Nimbus 2 controller enables the Greenkeeper on the Municipal course to operate that system independently without compromising the 36-hole complex.
The sophisticated Rain Bird Smart Pump software is installed at Moor Park, enabling the control system to communicate with the pump station while the system is operating. This facilitates constant flow optimisation, using actual pump flow instead of theoretical pump flow. If one pump were to fail in an irrigation cycle the system would continue to operate and the controller would automatically reschedule the flow demand. This system also enables the Course Manager to monitor the pump station and to record actual flows on the computer in his office.
