Legoland, Windsor

The childrens toy giant, Lego, decided to expand their adventure theme park business to new sites outside of Denmark. Legoland® Windsor is now one of the top attractions in the UK, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Ocmis (UK) Ltd was asked to design and install a unique irrigation system covering an area of some 65 acres. Planting types within each area were to include grassed areas, specialist shrubs, ornamental trees – and a maze. It was the company's reputation and competitive pricing that led to the award of this prestigious contract.

Legoland® Windsor, which opened in March 1996, is situated in 150 acres of wooded landscape on the edge of Windsor Great Park and features a wide range of plants and woodlands, which have to be kept in peak condition throughout the year. The Legoland Park has been designed to feel like a park within a park.

Ocmis designed and installed a system within the park, using a combination of pop-up sprinklers and drip irrigation so addressing the specific watering requirements of various plant groups. There is approximately 3000 pressure compensating sprinklers within the park. These are easily adjustable and are controlled by pressure regulated solenoid valves through a computerised control system, which effectively ensures that the pressure within each sprinkler is the same regardless of where it is located.

The pumpset is housed in a specially constructed underground plantroom and is connected to an underground storage tank, fed by mains water. The booster set is designed to accurately match the changes in demand with one, two or all three pumps operating as demand rises or falls. The pumps ensure a constant pressure, regardless of location and the number of sprinklers in use.

The system installed works effectively and continues to meet the varies and changing irrigation needs of each of the different areas within Legoland producing a lush and aesthetically pleasing environment for the park’s many visitors to enjoy throughout the seasons.
